This mystery works best when it delves into the complexities of the Dickinson family, particular its depiction of Emily’s cold father, Congressman Edward Dickinson, and her controlling sister, Lavinia. Amish cozies can work, but Flower needs to work on making characters credible and compelling. Flower offers imaginative touches: pets with character (a crabby cat named Gigabyte). The first in a quirky cozy mystery series full of magical fun, featuring an enchanted garden in Scotlanda delight from start to finish (Juliet Blackwell, New York Timesbestselling author). The bad guys are cartoony (“he grinned at me, tobacco juice trailing down his lower lip”) the theology of the Amish implausible (“there is not one right way to be obedient to the Lord”). This series also has a nice hint of the paranormal that runs. This is my favourite series by Amanda Flower, and once again I was pulled in and taken on a wonderful journey to Scotland and the magic of Duncreigan. 899 Ratings 189 Reviews published 2020 5 editions.
